RACV Marine commissioned me to write this long-form article on recreational boating during the Victorian winter.
Boating and fishing in Australia’s southern states is highly seasonal. Peak period is during summer so the intention of this piece was to highlight the benefits of boating during the traditional off season, while also bringing attention to important safety considerations in cold water.
The substance of this article was based on interviews with two experts: Charlie Micallef, a charter boat operator and fishing show presenter; and Stephen Brown, a 14-year veteran with the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard.
The result was an in-depth article that provided original insight into the ‘fun’ fishing aspects of winter boating while also highlighting important marine safety considerations, such as Stephen Brown’s fascinating (and quite sobering) insight into the effects of cold water immersion.
